LIPIDS BCH201

*Lipids can be defined as any fat - soluble (Lipophilic), naturally occurring molecules such as Fats, Oils, Waxes and Fat - soluble* vitamins

*Lipophilic means when something tends to combine with or dissolve in lipids or fa

*Fat are used synonymously for lipid however, Fat is just one of the classes involved in lipid and contain greater amount of energy than carbohydrates(energy Storage for living organism

*Though, the energy gotten from carbohydrates are fast and reliab

*Lipids can be classified into two

 *1. Storage Lipids*

 *2. Structural lipids

Lipids has a lot of functions but I will be highlighting about seven points to note do

*Biological Functions of Lipids

 *1. Energy Storage*

 *2. Enzyme co - factors*

*3. Emulsifying agents in* *digestive tract, hormones and* *intracellular Messengers*

 *4. Electron carrier*

 *5. Light absorbing pigment*

*6. Structural components of cell membranes*

 *7. Hydrophobic anchors for protein

*Storage Lipids are divided into 3 classes while structural lipids are divided into 5classes according to BCH 201 manua

*Storage Lipids

 *i. Fatty acids*

 *ii. Triacylglycerols*

 *iii. Waxes

*Structural Lipids

 *i. Glycerophospholipids*

 *ii. Galactolipids*

 *iii. Sulfolipids*

 *iv. Sphingolipids*

 *v. Sterols

*Triacylglycerols and waxes are build from fatty acids

*Fatty Acids that has fat, carboxylic acid. They are made of hydrocarbon chain

*Fatty acid is classified int

 *1. Saturated*

 *2. Unsaturated

*Saturated fatty acid are fatty acid that the carbons are fully filled,no way for any radical to come in. By implication, they are only containing only single bond.

*Unsaturated fatty acids are fatty acids tht the carbons are not fully filled, partially saturated. By implication, they are containing one or two double bonds

*IDENTIFICATION OF SATURATED AND UNSATURATED FATTY ACI

*There's something like the following there

 *Common name and carbon skeleton

*16:1(∆ⁿ

*16 means a particular fatty acid that has 16 carbon atoms*

 *:* *Means ratio*

*1 means there is one double bond

*∆ shows where the double bond i

ⁿ means C1, C2, C3 and so

1,2, 3 et

So, 16:1(∆ⁿ

First thing to note is that, it's an unsaturated fatty acid that has a double bon

Let's use Palmitoleic acid as an exam

16:1(∆

16carbon chain with one double bond at position
