🧫CHE101 CHEMICAL KINETICS

  CHEMICAL KINETICS

*Kinetics*: It studies the rate at which chemical processes occurs

Aside the information about the speed at which reaction occurs, kinetics also shed light on the _reaction mechanism_ i.e exactly how the reaction occurs

 *CHEMICAL KINETICS*

This is therefore the study of reaction rates or how fast a reaction proceeds. Reaction rates are generally measured as increase in concentration per time.

 It could be mathematically expressed as:

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

    *Rate of Reaction = Change in Concentration / time*

 *Rate of Reaction = ∆(A) / t = d(A)/dt*

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖

 *REACTION RATES*

Rate of reactions can be determined by monitoring the change in concentration of either reactants or products as a function of time, t.

  Reaction Rate is also the change in concentration of the reactant or a product with respect to time, t.

 For example, A -----> B

Rate = -∆(A) / ∆t.

   ∆A = Change in Concentration of A over a time, ∆t

Rate = ∆(B) / ∆t. ∆B = Change in Concentration of B over a time, ∆t

But, (A) decreases with time that is why A is negative.

[5/15, 20:21] AGY 100l: If it increases with time it becomes positive?

[5/15, 20:21] Tutor: Yes.

You get it

   *FACTORS AFFECTING RATE REACTION CONSTANTS*

1. *Temperature :* At higher temperature, the reaction molecules have more kinetic energy, moves faster and collide more often with a greater energy.

× Collision Theory: When two chemicals react, their molecules have to collide with each other(in a particular pattern) with sufficient energy for the reaction to take place.

× Kinetic Theory: Increasing temperature means that the molecules move faster

 2. *Concentration of Reactants:* As the concentration of Reactants increase, so does the likelihood that reactant molecules collide

*3. Catalysts:* They Speed up reactions by lowering the activation energy

 *4. Surface area of a solid reactant:* They provide more area for the reactant to be in contact

 *5. Pressure of gaseous reactants or products:* They cause increase number of collisions
