THE LIBRARY

Last week we talked about private, public, school, academic and special libraries.

Today we will conclude *types of libraries,* pls pay attention and ask questions

4.  *Digital and electronic libraries:*

Digital libraries compromise collections stored in digital formats as opposed to print, microform or other media. Materials contained therein include data and program files which store information.

These files can only be accessed by a computer. CD - ROMs and other types of electronic resources that requires the use of electricity are used in the digital library.

*Electronic libraries* are inclusive of digital libraries in the sense that they also consists of digital resources but have internet connectivity.

The difference between both libraries is that digital libraries consist mainly of information stored in data bases and in storage devices such as CD- ROMs, but lack access to the internet, while electronic libraries store databases and allow access to internet sources and services

*Advantage of electronic library* is that people gain access to the information at any time of the day as long as there is internet connection but digital library is restricted to the confines of the physical space in which it is located.

5.  Now to *virtual libraries* ๐Ÿ–ฅ️

It is popularly known as library without walls. It is so called because one can access it from it irrespective of wherever you find yourself

A virtual library comprises electronic devices which are used to  access digital information either from the internet or from a collection of data bases.

Any kind of library can be virtual as long as it has the required electronic tools to operate.

These devices include a computer, modem or phone network, an external storage device and a printer

6.  *Archives:* an archive is a place where a large number of historical are stored.
It is mainly responsible for the collection and preservation of public and historic records for the use of historian and researchers.

Archives differ from other libraries because they:-

- primary sources of information I.e. letters and papers, documents, pictures, real objects, audio, videos, e.t.c. most of the information's in libraries are dug out from archives

 - have content organized in groups rather than individual items.

An important note to take: books in the library are catalogued individually but items in an archive are group by their place or source of origin.

- have unique contents: a book title may be found in many different libraries but the records in an archive cannot be found or consulted at any other location except in archives that holds them.

*Pls drop your questions on anything you do not understand* ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

*Functions of the university or academic library* include the provisions of the following services:
- Reading and lending services
- Reservation services
- Reference services
- User education
- Exhibition and displays
- Provision of seating and study facilities
 - Provision of library publications
  - Audio- visual facilities
  - ICT services
  -photocopying services
 - Bindery services
 - Reading and lending services

Any registered member of a library should have access to read and and borrow books from a library. The same to applies to an academic library. The section where users can enjoy the benefit of borrowing library materials is called the circulation unit.
The major duties of these unit is:
1. Response to user's queries
2. Registration of users and
3. Lending and borrowing of library materials.

The circulation unit is the first point of call for library users.
This unit helps the library to determine the number of people who explore its resources and services, it also helps the library to know how efficient their services are.

Library users borrow books for a period of time.
Loans period vary from one library to the other. During registration, users are made to fill certain cards, some of which will be actively used to borrow books

When borrowed records are checked out and records charged in. When materials are returned, they are discharged and checked in back to the shelf.
Simply understand that borrowing and returning of materials is a process of described as charging and discharging or checking out and checking in of library materials.
The circulation unit sends notices and imposes fines on overdue books.

 We would end here today
Pls drop your questions, I will always attend to your questions.
Have a lovely evening ahead
